Gary's Top 5 Story Arcs

From Age of Apocalypse to Castaway in Dimension Z - there have been a lot of events that have defined eras and changed dynamics entirely. Storytelling is paramount in bringing superheroes to life. Storytelling is the vehicle that allows your favourite heroes and teams to shine. So with that in mind (and because I love to have opinions), here are my top 5 story arcs.

5. Civil War

This one's pretty standard. In 2006 we all found out that Tony Stark is really willing to do just about anything to be right. Although he is on the right side of history in the recent Civil War II storyline, back in 2006 he was not. I won't go into it in too much detail as Tony's war crimes during this arc are almost insurmountable. Huge moments pepper this important and classic storyline including Spider-man's public disclosure of his identity, Hercules' immortal "THOU ART NO THOR!" and of course the murder of Goliath. Also Cap rides a fighter jet. Great stuff.

4. Spider-man: Ends of the Earth

Ends of the Earth was full throttle and an absolute treat. Spidey punches Al Gore, Dr Octopus tricks the world into allowing him to almost microwave the earth and Spider-man is the only one who notices the big microwave. Okay so its not actually Al Gore its Chameleon but yeah. The Avengers are defeated by The Sinister Six as part of Dr Octopus' big play to finally defeat Spider-man (and planet earth) before he dies. With the Avengers incapacitated and Spidey left on his own he has to call on some interesting allies. Cue one the best supporting casts ever. He calls in Titanium Man from Russian, Big Hero Six from Japan, Union Jack from England, Silver Sable and a few more international friends. Its really fun to see these heroes and villains working together worldwide to help Spider-man save the planet. There's also a pretty sad death in there. Gotta have a sad death. Its almost mandatory.

3. X-men: Second Coming

Hey there! Do you like to cry? Well then THIS is the story for YOU! On the edge of extinction, hated by everyone for their genetics and clinging to Hope. Literally there's a girl called Hope and she's supposedly the messiah of the mutant race. She's finally returned after running off through time with her dad: Cable. Now that she's back every extremist group that hates mutants have aligned to kill her. The X-men have to mobilize and protect her and their livelihoods from attacks on all sides. Sacrifice, tears and the space-time continuum. Will the X-men ever have a good day?

2. Annihilation: Conquest

So you and your pals have finally held off an invasion of all-consuming bugs known as the Annihilation Wave. Its time to relax! Incorrect. The Phalanx, essentially Marvel's answer to The Borg have decided to step into the huge hole the bugs chewed in the universe to become the next big bad dudes. To make things worse they're being led by Ultron! Nova and Star-Lord, heroes of the first Annihilation war must gather their space friends (including Ronan the Accuser and Quasar) to fight back with depleted resources and friends dropping around them like flies. As with any cosmic-based Marvel storyline all the dials are turned up to 11.

1. Secret Invasion

Your friends and family could be shape-changing aliens from beyond the stars intent on conquest. Hell, I could be too. Trust no one and shoot anything that's suspicious! Secret Invasion is an amazing storyline where every major superhero team has been infiltrated by Skrull agents. Some agents are so deep under cover they don't even know they're aliens until they're activated. Betrayal, kidnap, intrigue and the return of Thor. Long story short the Skrull are on a fanatical religious mission to conquer our planet. Its also important to note that this arc spawned the greatest Black Panther tie-in title of all time. 10/10 - watch your friends closely.
